Interpreting Self - Organizing Maps through Space – Time Data Models

چکیده
Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are a technique that has been used with high-dimensional data vectors to develop an archetypal set of states (nodes) that span, in some sense, the high-dimensional space. Noteworthy applications include weather states as described by weather variables over a region and speech patterns as characterized by frequencies in time. The SOM approach is essentially a neural network model that implements a nonlinear projection from a highdimensional input space to a low-dimensional array of neurons. In the process, it also becomes a clustering technique, assigning to any vector in the high-dimensional data space the node (neuron) to which it is closest (using, say, Euclidean distance) in the data space. The number of nodes is thus equal to the number of clusters. However, the primary use for the SOM is as a representation technique, that is, finding a set of nodes which representatively span the high-dimensional space. These nodes are typically displayed using maps to enable visualization of the continuum of the data space. The technique does not appear to have been discussed in the statistics literature so it is our intent here to bring it to the attention of the community. The technique is implemented algorithmically through a training set of vectors. However, through the introduction of stochasticity in the form of a space–time process model, we seek to illuminate and interpret its performance in the context of application to daily data collection. That is, the observed daily state vectors are viewed as a time series of multivariate process realizations which we try to understand under the dimension reduction achieved by the SOM procedure. The application we focus on here is to synoptic climatology where the goal is to develop an array of atmospheric states to capture a collection of distinct circulation patterns. In particular, we have daily

Green Product Consumers Segmentation Using Self-Organizing Maps in Iran
This study aims to segment the market based on demographical, psychological, and behavioral variables, and seeks to investigate their relationship with green consumer behavior. In this research, self-organizing maps are used to segment and to determine the features of green consumer behavior. This was a survey type of research study in which eight variables were selected from the demographical,...
متن کاملSelf-Organization in the Nervous System
Self-organization refers to a process in which the internal organization of a system increases in complexity without guidance from the outside world. In brain development many aspects of self-organization are involved. Although development of the nervous system depends on external stimulation, pattern formation in the brain is considered to be a result of internal interactions through unsupervi...
متن کاملLandforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data
During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...
متن کاملFlexible Architecture of Self Organizing Maps for Changing Environments
Catastrophic Interference is a well known problem of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) learning algorithms where the ANN forgets useful knowledge while learning from new data. Furthermore the structure of most neural models must be chosen in advance. In this paper we introduce an hybrid algorithm called Flexible Architecture of Self Organizing Maps (FASOM ) that overcomes the Catastrophic Interf...
متن کاملAn Approach to Collaboration of Growing Self-Organizing Maps and Adaptive Resonance Theory Maps
Collaboration of growing self-organizing maps (GSOM) and adaptive resonance theory maps (ART) is considered through traveling sales-person problems (TSP).The ART is used to parallelize the GSOM: it divides the input space of city positions into subspaces automatically. One GSOM is allocated to each subspace and grows following the input data. After all the GSOMs grow sufficiently they are conne...
